Flight Reservations
How Long Is a Dummy Ticket Valid?
There is no universal validity period. Learn what affects a temporary reservation and why ordering at the right time matters.
Quick answer
There is no universal validity period for a dummy ticket or temporary flight reservation. A hold can last hours or days depending on airline inventory, fare rules, ticketing deadlines, booking channel and provider process. FlyingHelpline currently states up to seven days for its service, but that is provider-specific, not guaranteed, and may change.
Why there is no fixed validity period
A temporary reservation occupies space in a live booking environment without necessarily having a paid ticket attached. Airlines and reservation systems can set a deadline by which ticketing must occur. When that deadline passes, the segments may be cancelled automatically and the inventory returned for sale.
The hold period can depend on the airline, route, departure date, fare conditions, seat availability and booking channel. A reservation made far from departure may behave differently from one made close to the flight. A schedule change, duplicate-booking check or airline action can also alter the record before an expected deadline.
Because these factors are outside a traveller’s control, a responsible provider should not describe one duration as universal. The relevant question is whether the reservation accurately reflects the intended journey and remains active at the time it is legitimately needed.
Why temporary reservations expire
Unticketed bookings are not intended to hold airline inventory forever. Automatic ticketing deadlines help airlines release seats that have not been purchased. Once a reservation is cancelled or released, the same flights or fare may no longer be available.
Expiry may cause the record to disappear from a retrieval page, show cancelled segments or display a different status. The document saved earlier does not update itself, so a PDF can show an itinerary even after the live record changes. That is why an old document should not be treated as proof of current status.
Never change a date, status or booking code on a saved document. If a current reservation is needed, contact the provider and ask what accurate options are available.
What “up to seven days” means
FlyingHelpline currently states that its flight reservations may remain valid for up to seven days. This is a statement about that provider’s current service, not an industry-wide rule. The words up to matter: an individual reservation may remain active for a shorter period because airline and system conditions can change.
The statement should not be read as a guarantee that every record will display for seven complete days, or that it will remain active until a visa decision. Service descriptions and terms can also change, so check the provider’s current page before ordering and ask support about the timing relevant to your submission.
No validity claim changes the nature of the document. It remains a temporary reservation, not an issued airline ticket, and it cannot be used for boarding.
Why ordering too early can cause problems
If a reservation is created weeks before an appointment or upload deadline, it may expire before the document is reviewed. Ordering early does not extend the airline’s ticketing deadline. It can instead create a mismatch between the saved itinerary and the live booking record.
Begin early by researching the official checklist and planning the route, not necessarily by creating the reservation. Confirm the submission date, whether an itinerary is requested, and whether the authority gives any timing instruction. Then arrange the document close enough to the required point to reduce avoidable expiry risk.
Do not assume the reservation must stay active until a final decision unless an official instruction says so. If the authority asks for updated information later, respond through the stated process with accurate current documents.
A practical timing checklist
Use these questions before paying for any temporary reservation service.
- Does the current official checklist request a flight reservation or only a proposed itinerary?
- What is the appointment, upload or document-submission date?
- Has the passenger name, route and travel period been finalised?
- What does the provider currently say about typical or maximum validity?
- Does the provider explain corrections if a detail is wrong?
- Can the status be checked through the relevant booking channel?
- Are flights, hotels, insurance and the daily plan consistent?
What to do if a reservation expires
Do not panic and do not alter the document. Confirm the status through the appropriate airline, reservation-system portal or service provider. A record that is unavailable on one website may require another channel, but the provider should explain which system applies.
If the record has genuinely expired and an accurate current reservation is required, ask the provider about replacement terms. Keep communication factual. A newly created record may have different flights or times because availability changes.
For visa-document questions, the responsible embassy, consulate, immigration authority or authorised visa centre remains the correct source. A temporary reservation cannot guarantee acceptance or approval regardless of how long it remains active.
